Tour Map #11
A true engineering marvel, the Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge is not only the longest covered bridge in the United States but also a testament to vision and perseverance. Spanning an impressive 613 feet across the Ashtabula River, this Pratt truss bridge stands 93 feet above the water, providing breathtaking views and solid construction built to last over a century. Planning for the project began in 1995 when severe deterioration of the old iron bridge prompted a need for replacement. Designed by former County Engineer John Smolen and architect Timothy Martin, the bridge was made possible through $5 million in federal funding and years of careful planning, environmental studies, and construction.
Built to handle full legal loads—including 80,000-pound tractor-trailers—the Smolen-Gulf Bridge is a perfect blend of strength and classic charm. Constructed with 613,000 board feet of timber and reinforced with nearly half a million pounds of steel, it’s a masterpiece of covered bridge design. With its signature Olympus Green stain and two five-foot covered walkways, this iconic bridge is more than just a roadway—it's a must-visit landmark for history buffs, engineers, and anyone who loves a scenic drive through Ashtabula County’s rich covered bridge heritage!
